Valuing the Invaluable: The Critical Role of Family Caregivers and Policies to Support Them

Research tells us that nearly seven in 10 Americans who reach age 65 will someday need help from others to get through the day. We are beginning to recognize that without the unpaid work of family caregivers, America’s system of long-term care would fall apart. In dollar amounts, the worth of this care is $600 billion. Now, after years of laboring in obscurity, the status of family caregivers is starting to change. Recent federal policy actions point to an encouraging trend: Increasingly, the invisible army of 48 million family caregivers is becoming recognized for its integral role in the healthcare landscape. Panelists will highlight the role of family caregivers and issues they face from multiple perspectives, from policy to practical applications. Panelists will explore value-based care models, closing gaps in care, and improving quality measures while reducing overall cost of care.

Creating Social Connections through the Power of Play

The benefits of play for older adults have been well researched and documented. Numerous studies have consistently demonstrated the health benefits of play, which include improving feelings of isolation and reducing signs of cognitive decline. Consumers are now making the connection as well. A recent AARP survey of adults ages 50 and older found almost all (87%) agree that participating in fun and playful activities is good for their health. Ageless Innovation has developed a line of board games that deliver on both the social and cognitive benefits of play. In parallel, Ageless Innovation launched the Reach Out and Play initiative this year, with AARP serving as the title sponsor, to showcase the issues associated with social isolation and loneliness—and how social connections can be created through the power of play.

The shortage of workers (nurses, nursing assistants, home care aides and senior living workers) is worsening with no end in sight. And healthcare professionals are overwhelmed by too much information and inadequate ways to process it. These areas are ripe for the use of AI to save labor, save time, and help make better decisions.  This session, moderated by renowned industry analyst, Laurie Orlov, will explore ways organizations are using AI to streamline, provide assistance, improve the quality of care and care guidance.

Hospital to Home: The Next Steps in the Care Continuum

Care transitions are only the first part of the Care Economy equation. Today, family caregivers are 53 million strong and home care workers represent another 4 million caregivers, yet the gap in care for the older population is looming. By 2035 more than 13 million adults over age 75 will be living alone at home and one report found 68% of those age 50+ will require assistance with daily living and mobility over the next 10-20 years.

Sherri Snelling, corporate gerontologist and author of “Me Time Monday – The Weekly Wellness Plan to Find Balance and Joy for a Busy Life,” shares research insights from her book to map out the home care ecosystem and trends on how the home health hub is becoming increasingly vital. Looking beyond sick care to well care trends for older adults at home, this overview will also look at social prescribing programs in the U.K. to address loneliness among older adults.

Panel Discussion #1: The Home Care Regulatory and Reimbursement Landscape

Today, more than half of all Medicaid dollars goes to home and community-based services. Additionally, in-home support services provided by Medicare Advantage plans increased 50% between 2022 and 2023. This panel will discuss the status of recent payment cuts by CMS for home health, the impact of private equity acquisition of major home care agencies, the ongoing home care staffing crisis, the future of value-based care and how to navigate the regulatory, reimbursement and care transition gaps from hospital to home care.

Moderator: Sherri Snelling, Corporate Gerontologist and Author, Me Time Monday.
